Top 5 Targets

1 Portable computers

I-Pads, tablets and laptops are a highly sought after by thieves due to their size, weight & portability and because of their popularity they can be sold on easily for a good price. You should always keep these items well hidden when your home is empty to reduce the risk of a thief stealing them if your home is broken into. Use a UV pen to write your name and postcode on them, add login passwords your gadgets and register them with www.immobilise.com. Be sure to add your serial numbers to this site. This way, if they are stolen and recovered by the Police there is a much higher chance of getting them back.

2 Smart phones

Smart phones, like I-pads and tablets are extremely portable which makes them easy for somebody to steal. However unlike I-pads there is the possibility of becoming a victim of theft when you are out and about. Reduce this by keeping your phone out of sight as much as possible, keeping to well lit, public paths at night. Again, add smart phones and any other type of mobile phone to the immobilise website. You can find the serial number of your phone by pressing *#06#.

3 Money and jewellery

Jewellery is usually of high value and can easily be pawned quickly and without question. Plus it is easy to put in a coat pocket, meaning a thief can walk down the street without anybody knowing they have stolen goods in their possession.

Money is the best thing any thief could wish to steal as there is pretty much no risk of being caught with stolen money as it is not identifiable to a single person. However, if you keep money at home keep a copy of the individual serial numbers of each bank note, so if your money is stolen and the Police arrest someone with your stolen money it can be linked directly back to you.

Another way to reduce the chances of your jewellery or money from being stolen is to securely fit a safe in your home. These can cost as little as £30 and will keep your belongings secure.

4 Bicycles

Thieves have been known to steal bicycles in broad daylight. Most of the times bikes are stolen by opportunistic thieves so always use a secure lock (or locks) to secure your bike to an immovable object whenever you leave it. Bikes are stolen because they are easy to steal, easy to sell and provide the thief with a mode of transport on which to vacate the scene of the crime. Mark your bike with a UV pen or have your postcode stamped into it. Remember that you can add your bikes unique frame number along with pictures of your bike to immobilise.com. Read our blog and watch a video about bicycle security.

5 Home entertainment

Home entertainment systems are expensive, light weight and can be found in most homes around the UK. Therefore any thief who can get their hands on your flat screen 3D TV or DVD player can make some easy money by selling it on quickly at the pub. Write your name and postcode on all of these items and add pictures and the serial numbers to the Immobilise website.

Invisible Car Security – Supaglass

When we think of vehicle security we immediately think alarm systems, immobilisers, vehicle trackers and of course highly visible security products such as wheel clamps, steering wheel locks, gearstick & handbrake clamps, locking wheel nuts and window stickers.

But what if there was an invisible shield to protect your car from its weakest entrance point, the windows? Today there is such a shield. It is known as Supaglass and is a super-strong, 300 micron thick, optically clear, polyester laminate. This clear laminate is specially designed to hold the broken window of a vehicle together and can only be penetrated after a prolonged attack at the window.

Once this laminate is professionally installed it can prevent smash and grab techniques used by thieves whereby they will use the element of surprise and smash the window of either an occupied or unoccupied vehicle, put one arm in through the broken window and steal your handbag or laptop bag etc which may be lying on a passenger seat. This can usually take less than a couple of seconds for the thief to do, by which point they are running away before you have had time to realise what has happened.

Prevent Smash & Grabs - Supaglass

With the glass firmly held in place, smash and grab thieves will not stick around trying to smash into your vehicle due to the noise they will make alerting passers-by in case they are caught or recognised and will usually flee the area, keeping you and your belongings safe.

And although you will need to replace the window, you won’t be left with the task of clearing up all the smashed glass that would have otherwise been strewn all over the inside of the car and quite possibly you.

Aside from its obvious, if yet invisible deterrent towards thieves it also has another use; to keep the occupants of the vehicle safe from flying glass inside of the cabin in side impact or roll-over situations.

The side impact protection system is a really smart way to protect both yourself and other occupants when travelling in your car. If your vehicle is struck on the driver or passenger side, the chances are that the side windows are going to be smashed and these shards of glass are going to be thrown into the car potentially causing injury to the occupants of the vehicle.
Supaglass Side Protection System

With the Supaglass correctly installed onto the inside of your windows the tiny shards of glass will be held together allowing none, or very little, glass to enter the cabin and keeping the occupants safe.

But what happens if you want to use the window to escape from your vehicle? Due to its design, although it is very hard to push the shattered window in from the outside, it is very easy to push it out from the inside allowing any trapped occupants to escape with ease.

Jamie Olivers Solar Powered Security Lights

Fifteen Security Lights

Jamie Oliver has many restaurants across the country and Fifteen is situated on the Cornish seafront overlooking the beautiful Watergate Bay and donates all its profits to a local charity.
The restaurant is one of three which runs an apprenticeship programme for young people between the ages of 18 – 24 who are often in need of a break in life and are willing to learn to cook some of the best dishes around.
Down the steps to the entrance and above the doors are 3 SolarMate 1 security lights which are used as welcome lights to illuminate the dark entrance at night.
Due to each units 3 bright LEDs, they will provide enough light to illuminate the way for customers when they arrive and leave the restaurant without blinding them like normal halogen security floodlights would.
And because they are motion sensitive, they will only turn on for a short amount of time when movement is detected. Because these lights will automatically turn on and off they do not produce a constant source of light pollution, therefore keeping the beauty of Watergate Bay intact at night.
The SolarMate 1 security light has been chosen by the restaurant for 3 reasons, firstly the lights green credentials; they are solar powered, secondly, they won’t blind potential customers but will produce enough light to help customers make their way to and from the restaurant, and thirdly, they are easy to fit and do not require mains power which gave the restaurant the freedom to fit them almost anywhere they chose.

Security Warning Signs

Security Warning Signs
You have a vast amount of monetary items stored in your home. Items that burglars will love to steal and sell on. There are very simple ways to help deter burglars from breaking into your home.

Homeowners have a huge amount of money in their homes in the form of cash which is kept under the bed and goods which make their homes comfortable such as flat screen TV’s, games stations, DVD players, computers etc. Not to mention the amount of expensive goods in their garage and shed such as lawn mowers and bicycles. All this makes homes just like yours great targets for burglars. They are looking for cash and merchandise that can be easily sold for cash.

Imagine the amount of merchandise which could be stolen from your home. I’m pretty sure it is a huge amount in monetary terms. And this is just the cost of the goods that could be stolen; this does not include the cost of the damage done in the process of a forced entry.

Homes are burgled because they are easy for intruders to break in. Crooks begin by picking homes that look like easy targets. They look for areas around your home which gives plenty of cover for them to hide themselves. They look for signage that may suggest that you have added security fitted to your house. They look for burglar alarms. They look for security lights. They look for CCTV cameras.

Signs are a great way to help protect your home. They are inexpensive and should be the first step in securing your home. It is a way of indicating if there is a dog, security cameras, or burglar alarms.

A burglar will look for these signs. They will not knowingly pick a property to burgle that is protected. They would rather cross the street and pick a house which is unprotected.

Add signage to your home to deter potential intruders. For more protection it is a good idea to fit a house alarm or even a simple dummy external siren box to make it look like your home is alarmed. These steps are simple and cheap to implement.

Trim back large bushes on your property and use lighting to illuminate dark areas around your home which could hide potential intruders. Thieves don’t like to be seen!

Bicycle Security

The government are currently trying to get all of us on our bicycles and out of our cars to help reduce congestion and pollution. They have set up ride to work schemes which help people to pay for new bikes easily over a long term.

Bikes are expensive, some more than others, but they all have one thing in common when it comes to their price. You had to work hard to pay for your bike, whether it cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds and as such, you want to keep it safe.

I can pretty much guarantee that you lock your bike to a bike rack or fence when you get to work, college, or even if you are quickly getting something from the shops. But what type of lock do you use and how have you locked your bike? Some inexpensive locks can be cut through very easily in seconds and some are much harder and take much, much longer to break.

Watch this Avon and Somerset Police video and see both good and bad ways of locking your bike.

Don’t be the next victim of crime.

Interior Lights Can Significantly Aid Home Security

Have you ever walked down a street at night, seen an interior light on in someone’s house and thought ‘That house is empty’? I bet you haven’t. And you’d be right more than 99% of the time.

But have you ever walked past a house with no lights on in the evening and thought ‘That house is occupied’? Again, I bet you haven’t because there is a good chance that house is empty.

Burglars think the same. If they see a house with interior lights on at night they are going to assume that somebody is in and they are going to walk on down the street until they find a house which looks empty. A house with no lights on at in the evening is more likely to be empty; maybe the owners are out for the evening or work night shifts.

Leaving some interior lights on when you are out is an excellent way to deter burglars and thieves. Leaving a radio or TV on is also a great deterrent. You can even buy “Fake TV’s” which simulates the lighting output of a television.

Always leave more than one light on. Leaving only light on can also be an invitation to burglars. If they haven’t seen any movement or other lights on for some time they may be inclined to think that nobody is home but the light has been left on. Always leave more than one light on.

It is better still to use timer switches on multiple lights around the house. These switches are usually inexpensive and you are able to pre-set multiple ‘on/off’ times on each timer. Buy doing this is it gives your home a lived in look to anyone watching.

And always remember to close any curtains or blinds before you go out otherwise when the lights come on at night potential intruders will be able to see that nobody is at home. Closing your curtains will not defeat the point of turning a light on because light will always shine around the edge of curtains.

Steer Clear Of Car Crime

A Car That Has Been Broken IntoThey say that your car is your most expensive possession after your buying your home. It is also, for many of us, our way of getting to and from work, transport which takes us away on day trips, our way of getting to the doctors etc. Whichever way you look at it our cars are a large part of our lives so it is best to keep them secure.

Here are a few tips to help keep your vehicle safe:

  • When you park your car, fit a security device to the steering wheel or handbrake
  • Whenever you leave you vehicle, always arm the alarm system if it has one fitted
  • Get an immobilizer fitted to your vehicle if it doesn’t already have one
  • Always lock your car, even if you are only nipping into the newsagents
  • Never leave your car keys in the ignition, or an unattended car
  • Remove all portable satellite navigation devices including the leads
  • Keep all windows and sunroofs closed including any pop-out windows
  • Protect your windows from smash and grab thieves by getting Supaglass professionally fitted to your windows
  • Remove everything from your car, even your old coat from the back seat. Someone may think you are trying to hide something underneath it
  • Never keep the V5 vehicle document or other owners documents in your car. Always keep them in a secure location at home
  • If you have a removable stereo or one which has a removable front never keep it in the car or hide it under the driver or passenger seat because thieves always look here
  • Do not leave anything of value in the glove compartment or boot
  • Vehicle etching is an inexpensive way to deter someone stealing your car because they will need to replace any part which is etched such as the windows, lights and wheels before they can sell it on. Plus, it makes it easier for the police to identify your vehicle should it be stolen
  • Burglars will always look for keys when they have broken into a property, whether it is your house or car keys. Keep them hidden out of sight or next to you when you are sleeping
  • Never leave your car or house keys near your front door as thieves sometimes use wires and hooks to try and steal them through the letterbox

These are just a few ways to keep your vehicle secure. If you do all of these things then your car is less likely to be targeted by thieves. Remember, keeping valuables out of sight and out of your car makes it less likely to attract a thieves attention and less likely to be broken into. Nobody wants to come back to their car to find a smashed window or broken lock. And nobody wants to have to clean up the mess, take time to deal with the police and insurance companies.
